More snow on the way for Derbyshire, experts predict (with pictures)

Tuesday, December 02, 2008, 08:40

SNOW may seem the perfect festive addition for Derby’s ice rink but it caused problems for the organisers this morning.

Workers were out on the rink at 7.30am, clearing a build-up of snow after the early showers which affected most parts of Derbyshire.

Up to 7cm of snow fell in some parts when temperatures fell to -3 degrees overnight.

The Met Office issued a severe weather warning because of the heavy snow and ice, which caused hazardous driving conditions. It was in place until 11am this morning.

It has predicted more snow for tonight, and icy conditions for the next few days and motorists have been urged to take care.

Derby City Council said it sent out gritters at 7pm last night and 4am this morning to treat major roads.

There was a flurry of snow in Derby city centre at about 7.15am, with heavier snow falling in other parts of the county including Belper and Ashbourne. The Derbyshire Dales and High Peaks were the worst hit by the snow.

Forecasters said Britain was set for an Arctic blast today and more snow showers are set to sweep the country.

A band of wintry showers will start in Scotland and the north of England this morning and work their way towards the south throughout the day.

About an inch of snow is expected in the north of England today with sleet and rain more likely in the south.

The weather will remain cold for the next few days.

Wednesday will see maximum temperatures of 7C in the south of England and a maximum of 4C in the north.
