Plumbing firm Wolseley to cut 2,000 jobs

Tuesday, November 18, 2008, 12:25

A PLUMBING and building supplies firm which has several outlets in Derbyshire has announced plans to cut 2,000 jobs and close more than 200 branches.

Wolseley, which trades as Plumb Center and Build Center, announced the cuts this morning.

The firm, which has its UK head office in Reading, said that the business had suffered from a decline in trade due to the credit crunch and was making the job cuts because it did not expect the situation to improve in the short term.

It owns Plumb Center outlets in lkeston, Long Eaton, Ashbourne, Alfreton and Burton as well as the West Meadows Industrial Estate in Derby,

It also runs Build Centers in Ascot Drive, Derby and Chesterfield.

Wolseley operates more than 1,900 branches in the UK and Ireland.

The company has declined to say which branches it is looking to close but said the job cuts would be phased over the next few months.

In a statement released by the firm, it said: "We continue to react swiftly to market conditions with aggressive but measured cost reduction."
