The burglary happened at the News shop in Tamworth Road, Long Eaton, between 6pm yesterday and 4.20am this morning.
A police spokesman said: "They smashed through the glass door.
"Once inside they made an untidy search and stole the till of the counter which contained a cash float."
Police are appealing for witnesses.
